Phyllis was a high school art teacher for 30 years, the bulk of which she spent at Arapahoe High School in Littleton, Colorado. Her mantra is, "If art isn't challenging, enlightening and enjoyable, there is something wrong." Her goal in teaching, as well as in her own art, is problem-solving—to arrive at visual solutions through thinking.
Phyllis is a working artist in watercolor, mixed media, collage and pastels. While capable of realistic imagery, she prefers to abstract her subject matter, sometimes going beyond to the whimsical and even tongue-in-cheek humor. Her subjects include buildings, animals, birds, flowers and landscapes, which are often rendered in vibrant colors. In producing her work, Phyllis allows the painting to direct where she goes, allowing the art to simply evolve. To her, that process is the road to success in creating visual statements.
