Catalog ePub / PDF – eReader

Using eReader devices (Nook, Sony, Literati, etc.) to enjoy titles from your local library is easy. With Douglas County Libraries’ titles (with the exceptions of Overdrive and 3M) all you have to do is browse for a title you want, check it out, download it, and enjoy. Note: PDF files cannot be downloaded to Kindle.

What You Need

  • An eReader (Nook, Sony*, Literati, etc.)
  • A computer (laptop, PC, or Mac) with the ability to connect to USB
  • A USB cable
  • Your library card and PIN (usually the last four digits of your phone number)

Note: Sony T1 and T2 not compatible with Adobe Digital Editions.

How it works

1. Install Software

You will need Adobe Digital Editions and you will also need to authorize your device with an Adobe ID.

Download free software and get instructions here.

2. Browse, check out, download

Browse the Douglas County Library’s catalog, at douglascountylibraries.org, for a title you want to read.   Once you have found an Adobe PDF book and it is available, click “checkout”. If you are not in your library account, you will be prompted for your library card number and PIN.  In your account, under "eContent Titles, Checked Out Items", you will find the title you just checked out.

Plug in your USB cable to your eReader and computer, click “download” and select “open file with ADE.”  This will open another screen.

When you download a PDF eBook, your selection will open automatically in Adobe Digital Editions, letting you read on your computer right away or immediately download it to your device. To download it to your device, plug in your USB cable to your eReader and computer, click “download” and select “open file with ADE.”  This will open another screen. Find the item you just downloaded, highlight it and drag it to your device listed on the left hand side.  Eject your device.

3. Enjoy

Find your book on your device and begin reading.

You may not renew your items, but they may be able to be checked out again after your loan has ended, if no one else is waiting for the eBook.  You may also place it on hold.

4. Returning material early

From your library account, again under "eContent Titles, Checked Out Items", locate the title you want to return and click “Return Now” button.

Sometimes you will get a message that says “Please return this title from your digital reader.”  If that is the case, open Adobe Digital Editions from your desktop.  It is a brown colored logo with an open book in the center.  Make sure you are open to the correct view by clicking on the logo that looks like three books standing on a shelf near the top of the screen.  Look for the book you want to return on the list of titles.  Mouse to the front of the title until you see an arrow. Click on the arrow and “Return Borrowed Item” appears as an option.  Click on it, confirm, and the book will disappear.
