Associate Director of Community Services

Department: Administration
Posting Period: June 05, 2008 - August 06, 2008

Following the retirement of our extraordinary Associate Director of Community Services, the Douglas County Libraries, headquartered in Castle Rock, Colorado (just south of Denver and north of Colorado Springs), is seeking someone to continue the tradition of innovation. In the past couple of years our independent library district has converted from barcode to RFID, from traditional checkout to self-check and automated materials handling, from branch-specific phone reference to a centralized call center, from spine-out stacks to exciting, attention-grabbing displays, and more. Now we're working on a new service model for our libraries, emphasizing a more integrated team within each building unbound by a desk, and finally, unbound by the building. Imagine leading a group of enthusiastic, can-do managers of library branches, as well as our award-winning community relations and public programming department, as we try to tackle the frontier of 21st century librarianship: library service that is not centered on the building, but on the community itself. We are one of the largest library systems in Colorado. We checked out over 6.5 million items in 2007, and our circulation increased by 18%. We serve almost 250,000 residents in the county. Our branch locations include state-of-the-art, innovative facilities in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, Louviers, Parker, and Roxbourgh. We consistently rank in the top ten on Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings scale. We are not just distributors of books, bytes, music, and movies. (Although we're good at that, too -- with an average per capita circulation of over 23 per year.) We are catalysts for community change and active civic engagement. Come visit our website (DouglasCountyLibraries.org) and learn about us. Then, if you want to join a team defining the future of our profession, apply for the job. Under the direction of the Library Director, this position has responsibility for coordinating and supervising some or all aspects of community services including: planning, coordinating, and evaluating staffing and service delivery; formulating policy and procedure recommendations; developing and managing budgets; training and evaluating staff; cultivating and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other agencies within the library community and at the local and state level; and actively participating in envisioning the future of library services. Responsibilities will also include managing our Library Branch Managers and our Community Relations Manager.
